这个世界是平的，而且正在变得更平坦。
当哥伦布完成他的旅行归国后，他向国王和王后报告说，地球是圆的，并因此名垂青史。现在，弗里德曼告诉我们，世界是平的。
在《世界是平的》(The world is flat — a brief history of the twenty-first century) 这本书中，作者Thomas L. Friedman用自己无比丰富的见闻、访谈、案例分析和思考织成了一张网，描绘了一个在21世纪席卷一切的进程–全球化。开放源代码、外包、离岸生产、供应链和搜索技术……无论这些现象你是否熟悉，单独来看，它们似乎都不是举足轻重的。不过，当你把这一切编制在一起的时候，揭示出来的是一个巨大的蓝图和趋势–globalization！全球化已经”翻起了世界上每一块石头”(left no stone unturned)，其影响范围之大和深度之深都是前所未有的。
全球化是一个普通人不敢轻易下定义的东西，因为它的概念太大了，太复杂了。然而Friedman不信邪，用一支笔勾画出了全球化的图景（Part I, How the world became flat），一个个分析了全球化的驱动力（Chapter two, The ten forces that flattened the world）,而且设想了可能的对策（Part II & III）。在这里，向弗里德曼同学（这个不是已故的那个大经济学家弗里德曼）致敬！
当我们还在睡梦中时，世界正在悄悄地被碾平。一个变平了的世界和原来很不一样，我们需要加以认识、利用。如果你是一个想放眼全球的人，全球化是一个能令你激动的而且不能回避的话题。
